I chose to buy a van as I currently live in Germany and wanted to explore more of Europe before I move back home. It was an impulse buy. Best impulse buy ever!!! I bought it off a college who was selling it to make space in the garage. The van was in mint condition, and I just finished watching the first series of Hasta Alaska; I bought it within a week!
I’ve traveled Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, and Austria since Christmas and I’m off to Scandinavia over the summer!
I’ve also broken down twice, once in Austria and once in Belgium. The best breakdown experience is where I once found myself in a Renault garage in Austria, which was owned by a VW enthusiast. He knew exactly what was wrong and after a bit of a rummage found the part out the back of his garage. I was back on the road within half a day!!
I’ve also woken up with the feet hanging out the end of the van watching the hot sunrise over Lake Como; it’s the best way to spend time off, away from the pressures of work.
Traveling in a van allows me to chose what and when happens, eat healthily and enjoy the moment as opposed to the control of work! There’s nothing better than waking up and deciding there and then what to do, where to go or not, as sometimes the case may be.
My ultimate aim is to take extended time off and living full time in the van, travel the world and have an adventure. But for now, Norway beckons – which I’ve also managed to convince some friends to come along, one who also has recently purchased his own VW camper!
